Today’s story focuses on OB hospitalist Dr. Meredith Davenport and how she delivered lifesaving care to a patient.
Summary:
OBHG Hospitalist Dr. Meredith Davenport was on shift when she received a phone call from a nurse. The nurse said there was a cord prolapse and gave her the room number.
Dr. Davenport went to the patient’s room. The baby’s umbilical cord was on the bed (cord prolapse) and Dr. Davenport quickly checked the patient to find a footling breech. Each time the fetal foot extended, it was compressing the cord, causing drops in the baby’s heart rate.
Dr. Davenport quickly told the nurses to call the anesthesiologist and NICU team and meet them to the operating room for emergency surgery. Dr. Davenport hopped on the bed to elevate the baby’s foot as best she could, and they went to the OR.

“I’ve thought a lot about the benefits of having an OB hospitalist. Even in a community hospital, it is more frequent that something’s going to happen when there’s not a lot of providers around. And so, to have an OB hospitalist that can step in, take charge and proceed with a delivery if needed or be around to assist and set everything up will help improve the lives of women in this community.”
