In Shreveport, Louisiana, pregnant patients experiencing an obstetric emergency now have access to 24/7 specialized care at Willis-Knighton South’s new obstetric emergency department (OBED). In a recent KSLA News 12 interview, Dr. Nina Fertitta, an OB hospitalist with Ob Hospitalist Group, shared how this dedicated unit is expanding access to time-sensitive, expert care for women facing complications during pregnancy or postpartum.
Designed to treat patients from 20 weeks gestation through six weeks postpartum, the OBED provides immediate evaluation for symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, contractions, and elevated blood pressure—conditions that can escalate quickly without proper intervention. OBHG’s presence ensures a board-certified OB is always on site, ready to respond in real time when emergencies arise, regardless of the hour.
“This is important for the care of pregnant ladies, because things can happen very quickly in the OB department,” said Dr. Fertitta. “We’re that stopgap so that those patients have better outcomes.”
