This Veterans Day, Ob Hospitalist Group proudly honors the many veterans within our organization who have dedicated their lives to serving others, first through military service and now through medicine. Among them is Dr. Wesley Hodgson, an OBHG Site Director and veteran, whose experience in the military continues to shape his leadership and commitment to patient care.
A Mission That Endures
For Dr. Hodgson, the connection between military service and obstetric medicine is clear: both are rooted in a powerful sense of mission.
“My military background really taught me to be mission-oriented,” he reflects. “My mission in the military was healthy moms and healthy babies, just like my mission is today.”
That focus drives everything he does in the hospital, both as a physician and a leader. The discipline and teamwork instilled during his service guide how he approaches patient care and how he mentors his colleagues. “Hospitals aren’t always the easiest place to work,” he says, “but if you focus on the mission—healthy moms and healthy babies—it keeps you grounded. That’s what I try to instill in my colleagues every day.”
Dr. Hodgson also credits his time in uniform for shaping his leadership style. “The military is very driven by protocols and standardization, which we all know is the road to success in medicine,” he explains. “I’ve worked hard to bring that to the hospitals I’ve worked at, adopting standardization wherever possible. It’s the safest way to take care of patients.”
Filling the Gap in Care
After leaving the military, Dr. Hodgson joined OBHG because he saw an opportunity to meet a vital need in obstetric care.
“A lot of the patients we see wouldn’t necessarily have a doctor standing in front of them, but there always is when I’m there,” he says. “We fill that void by providing exceptional care 24 hours a day. Everyone deserves that when they come to have their baby.”
He emphasizes that OBHG hospitalists do far more than cover shifts. “Our job is to elevate the entire unit—working on quality improvement, standardization, and bringing the latest research into patient care,” he explains. “That’s how we make care better for everyone.”
When asked why he continues this work with such passion, his answer is simple and heartfelt:
“I do this because every mom and baby should have a doctor with them who cares about them and wants the best outcome possible. Being a hospitalist gives me the ultimate opportunity to do that.”
Honoring Veterans Everywhere
This Veterans Day, OBHG celebrates Dr. Hodgson and all who have served. Their courage, dedication, and unwavering sense of mission continue to inspire the work we do every day which ensures that every mother and baby receives the highest standard of care.
