California OB hospitalist, Dr. John McHugh, departed from Mont Saint Michel the morning of June 25 to cycle the first leg of a grueling 21-stage, 2,077-mile fundraising odyssey that shadows the route professional cyclists take in the Tour de France. On his very first shift back at the hospital, Dr. McHugh met a woman confined to a hospital bed for weeks because of pre-term labor.
“I started by talking with her about how much healthier her child could be if we can prolong her pregnancy and how this investment of her days and weeks will be a benefit to her and her family. Then I stepped back and thought about sacrifice, not in weeks or days but in how we truly experience it — minute by minute. I reflected on my recent journey, the long rides, the climbing, how in the moment, one could never really think about the big picture, or you’d just get off the bike and stop. I’ll never be pregnant. I’ll never have to worry if what I do will affect my child’s life forever. But maybe I could try to understand how one has to reframe sacrifice —We started talking about reading, about movies, about exercises she could do, and she began to smile and started to sketch out her day. My hope is that maybe the days, hours, and minutes doing my turns on the peloton can help me understand the days, hours, and minutes she is sacrificing for her family.”

El Camino Hospital – Los Gatos Campus
El Camino Hospital is a nonprofit hospital that offers full-service acute care to the Los Gatos community and surrounding areas. El Camino Hospital has served residents in the South San Francisco Bay Area for more than 50 years. The facility received the Healthgrades® Women’s Health Excellence Award™ for four consecutive years, the only hospital in Northern California to do so. El Camino Hospital – Mountain View Campus
El Camino Hospital is a 420-bed facility that provides acute care and surgical services to the Silicon Valley community. It was the only hospital in the region to earn the Healthgrades® Women’s Health Excellence Award™ four years in a row. The hospital delivers more than 5,000 babies each year and offers private birthing suites, level II and III neonatal intensive care units and maternal-fetal medicine for high-risk pregnancies.
Emanuel Medical Center – Turlock
Emanuel Medical Center’s Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center provides complete mother and newborn care. The center includes private labor and delivery suites with high-tech birthing beds, an onsite Level II NICU and free childbirth education classes in both English and Spanish. The hospital also offers comprehensive gynecological care for women of all ages, along with minimally invasive surgery options for hysterectomy, uterine fibroid removal and other conditions.
Central California
Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center – San Luis Obispo
Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center today is a 164-bed hospital has been providing acute care services to the San Luis Obispo community since 1959. It is the only hospital in San Luis Obispo County to offer high-risk pregnancy care, neonatal intensive care, the da Vinci Surgical Robot program, neurosurgery, pediatric care and trauma care. The facility’s Birth Center has delivered more than 40,000 babies in the past 50 years. All patients have access to private labor and delivery rooms as well as private recovery rooms. The hospital specializes in treatment of maternal, fetal and obstetrical complications, and is home to a level III NICU.
Bakersfield Memorial Hospital – Bakersfield
Bakersfield Memorial Hospital today is a 730-bed facility that has served the Kern County community since 1956. It has been awarded The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and is home to a NICU. The hospital’s maternity center features large birthing suites and state-of-the-art equipment and technology in a family-friendly environment.
Ridgecrest Regional Hospital – Ridgecrest
Ridgecrest Regional Hospital (RRH) currently sees approximately 400 annual deliveries. RRH Maternal/Child service staff are specifically trained in obstetrics, pediatrics and newborn nursery care and provide routine antenatal testing and obstetrical care to patients. The Maternal/Child Nurses are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP). The OB nursing staff is certified in fetal monitoring and the Newborn Stabilization Unit has the ability to stabilize 2 infants with the necessary Neonatal Cardio-Respiratory Monitors and Radiant Warmers. RRH also offers parenting classes and lactation counseling.
Southern California
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital – Santa Barbara
Cottage Health is a not-for-profit system that has been providing advanced medical care for patients throughout California for more than 125 years. The Birth Center rooms offer state-of-the art equipment, and the surgical suites include two operating rooms specifically for obstetrics and a post-anesthesia recovery room. Nurse-midwives are on staff, and the hospital houses a Perinatal Center led by a maternal-fetal medicine specialist. Santa Barbara Cottage is a designated Baby-Friendly® hospital. The facility currently sees 2,400 annual deliveries.
Palmdale Regional Medical Center – Palmdale
Palmdale Regional Medical Center is part of the Universal Health Services (UHS) system and a sister hospital to OBHG partner Rancho Springs. It serves the region by providing high quality medical services to residents of the Antelope Valley, Santa Clarita Valley and the surrounding communities. The facility estimates they will see 1,200 deliveries per year in their new labor and delivery unit.
St. Mary Medical Center – Apple Valley
St. Mary Medical Center is a 186-bed facility that has served the Apple Valley community since 1956. The hospital offers traditional maternity services, as well as a mother-baby assessment clinic after childbirth. Its medical staff is comprised of more than 300 physicians and the hospital is home to the only level II NICU in the region.
Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center – Tarzana
Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center opened its doors in 1973. Today, the medical center sees approximately 2,350 annual deliveries and houses the largest Level III NICU in the area. They also offer classes in childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care, infant massage, infant CPR and parenting.
Valley Presbyterian Hospital -Van Nuys
Valley Presbyterian Hospital (VPH) treats over 100,000 patients every year and performs approximately 2,300 annual deliveries and 1,478 triage visits. VPH offers free Maternal Child Health Education classes on topics such as prenatal care, childbirth preparation, breastfeeding preparation and support and infant care. VPH also has a nursing staff that is specially trained in breastfeeding support, and lactation consultants. The 32-bed NICU Level III provides the highest level of care for newborns born ill or premature and is one of the largest units of its kind in the San Fernando Valley.
Huntington Memorial Hospital – Pasadena
The 625-bed hospital is an acute care and surgical facility that has served the San Gabriel Valley community for more than 125 years. It is home to a level III NICU, labor-deliver-recovery rooms, a high-risk pregnancy unit and educational classes for new parents.
The Redlands Community Hospital today is a 229-bed facility that has been providing healthcare services to Redlands and surrounding areas since 1904. More than 2,400 babies are born at the hospital each year. The facility offers private birth suites for labor, delivery and recovery, as well as private couplet care rooms for mothers, babies and family members, and a NICU.
Loma Linda University Medical Center – Murrieta
Loma Linda University Medical Center is a 106-bed acute care and surgical facility that has served the Murrieta community since 2011. It is home to a six-bed level II NICU, five private labor/delivery/recovery rooms, 12 private postpartum rooms, couplet care, family education classes and support groups for new parents.
Rancho Springs Medical Center -Murrieta
Rancho Springs Medical Center believes a family-centered approach to childbirth can help promote the healthy growth and development of the entire family. They developed a facility that caters to helping create a positive family experience. The Childbirth Center at Rancho Springs is the largest facility of its kind in the region and features 17 spacious private labor and delivery suites, along with 24 postpartum rooms, triage areas, a dedicated post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), C-section operating rooms and a level II NICU.
Palomar Medical Center – Escondido
Palomar Medical Center provides dedicated birth centers, advanced technology and specialized care for premature newborns in their Level II NICU. Nurses are certified in labor and delivery, fetal monitoring, and neonatal intensive care. Other specialties are on staff, along with a perinatologist, an interpreter, and a certified lactation consultant. The hospital sees about 3,100 annual deliveries.
Sharp Grossmont Hospital – La Mesa
This 503-bed hospital is an acute care and surgical facility that serves the East County San Diego community.
Delivering more than 4,000 babies each year, Sharp Grossmont Hospital is home to 48 private suites (including 24 renovated postpartum delivery suites), high-risk pregnancy services, a level III NICU, cord blood banking and more.
It is ranked in the top 10th percentile by Press Ganey for patient satisfaction.
