A newly published article in the Louisville Courier Journal highlights the low rate of childbirth complications at Norton Women and Children’s Hospital, an OBHG partner hospital. Dr. Keehn Hosier, OBHG site director at Norton, along with Dr. Jennifer Evans, Norton’s system president of women’s and pediatric services, were quoted in the article about Norton’s steps to further reduce complications among pregnant and postpartum women.
Norton has many efforts in place to reduce maternal risks including the 24/7 presence of an OBHG hospitalist. Other efforts include established protocols for hemorrhage and hypertension, standing order sets and drills on common complications. "We're doing all we can to reduce the infection rate whenever possible," Dr. Hosier said in the article. "We’re constantly looking at what we could do better and reduce the risk to mothers and babies."
For the article, hospital billing data was analyzed revealing where a woman delivers her baby in Kentucky can determine how safe she is.
"I think it's a misconception that we can completely eliminate maternal morbidity and mortality. Pregnancy is essentially a very traumatic event for a mother," said Dr. Hosier. "But we're doing as much as we can (at Norton).”
