On demand webinar: advancements in postpartum hemorrhage management

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) continues to be one of the most serious complications in obstetrics. But with timely recognition, team-based communication, and the right tools, clinicians can significantly reduce risks and improve outcomes.

In a recent webinar hosted by Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG), Dr. Nikki Fanning, Vice President of Clinical Operations for the Northeast, and Dr. Eric Kittle, Site Director at Bellevue Women’s Center in New York, discussed emerging best practices for postpartum hemorrhage management and the critical role OB hospitalists play in emergency response and maternal safety.

The webinar explores essential questions many OB/GYNs face:

  • How do we proactively prepare for a potential hemorrhage?

  • What systems improve early recognition and fast action?

  • How can hospitalists elevate safety culture and team performance?

  • What does it take to drive meaningful change across units?

Dr. Fanning emphasized the importance of prevention:
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure here. It’s really arming your units, arming yourself with information, tools, checklists—anything you could put within your labor unit, within your pocket—to be able to respond to a postpartum hemorrhage.”

Dr. Kittle added that communication and preparedness go hand-in-hand:
“We really try and emphasize that we are kind of the safety officers on labor and delivery. So we make it a point every shift to have multidisciplinary rounds where this risk assessment tool is used.”

The speakers also addressed response timing and resource utilization, including the benefit of early intervention tools such as uterine balloon tamponade and intrauterine vacuum devices. “It has really revolutionized the way postpartum hemorrhage is treated,” said Dr. Kittle.

Final thoughts: OB Hospitalists leading the way

OB hospitalists are not only responding to emergencies, they are increasingly seen as maternal safety champions and first-line leaders in obstetric care. As Dr. Fanning shared, “We are the first responders. We are the safety champions and safety experts.”

Dr. Kittle summed up the impact: “It’s a win for both parties. The attending physicians are very comforted to know we’re there.”
