In hospitals across the country, OBHG clinicians deliver life-saving care every single day. Their around-the-clock presence ensures that all obstetrical patients receive immediate, unbiased care.
Today’s story focuses on OBHG clinician and Site Director Dr. Robin Whatley and how she delivered life-saving care to a patient diagnosed with eclampsia. Click on the video for the full account.
Summary:
Dr. Whatley was on a busy shift when she was called to see a patient in the emergency department. The patient was visiting from out of town and had a seizure at home. She also had a headache and wasn’t feeling well right before she seized.
Dr. Whatley quickly assessed the patient. She was evaluated for eclampsia, a condition of pregnancy where women have seizures due to elevated blood pressure and other related pregnancy issues. The patient was then treated with medication and monitored.

“As an obstetrician, we have all been trained to react to treat these disorders. But being able to be there in the hospital when it happened and attend to the patient immediately is something that you really can’t put a price on. She came in and her family was very nervous, very scared, and I was able to provide excellent and immediate care to that patient. And how reassuring it is for the staff in the emergency room and other physicians to have a board-certified trained provider in the hospital available to attend to these to these types of patients.
I think that the value of having someone in the hospital to attend to this is tantamount. I give my story from the perspective of an OB hospitalist, but prior to becoming a hospitalist I was a private practitioner, with my own private practice for over 10 years in this same hospital. And I would have loved to have a hospitalist in house at the time when I was practicing because I’m able to provide the service to the hospital and to the provider, but as well provide excellent care to that patient that was coming in. There is nothing more fulfilling than having to be able to perform in this role.”
