Expert Voices in Maternal Care and Safety: Meet Dr. Roxanna Doucet
Dr. Roxanna Doucet’s move to OB hospitalist work with OBHG was more than a career change—it was a transformative journey that revitalized her passion for maternal care and brought balance to her life. Seeking a shift from the fast-paced demands of private practice, Dr. Doucet found new opportunities with OBHG, where she could focus on what matters most to her: advancing maternal mental health and championing better outcomes for mothers and babies. Her story exemplifies the profound impact OBHG hospitalists have in redefining care and fostering meaningful change.
Advancing depression screenings at Maternal Health Home
One of Dr. Doucet’s most impactful initiatives since she became an OB hospitalist is her work with a maternal health home she helped launch. In collaboration with a managed care organization in South Texas, she partnered with a multidisciplinary team of population health experts, data analysts and quality specialists to create a comprehensive, supportive system for expectant mothers while addressing maternal mortality and morbidity.
Dr. Doucet emphasizes the importance of addressing mental health as part of comprehensive maternal care. Depression screening has become a critical component of her work at the maternal health home, helping to identify and support women facing emotional challenges during and after pregnancy. Additionally, implementing texting campaigns have proven to be a powerful tool, providing antenatal and postpartum depression screenings to mothers, identifying those at higher risk and ensuring appropriate referrals for counseling, interventions and medication.
“My work at the maternal health home is so meaningful,” said Dr. Doucet. “After I became an OB hospitalist, I realized I have so much more in me to give. Through this experience, I can touch so many more women’s lives.”
How OB hospitalist work helped revitalize Dr. Doucet’s career
For Dr. Doucet, the move to OB hospitalist work not only revitalized her career but also helped her rediscover her joy. She reflects on the personal and professional growth she’s experienced as an OB hospitalist with OBHG, noting how the role has given her the opportunity to find a better work-life balance. “I have time to spend with my parents… go to my kids’ events… those opportunities didn’t exist before I became a hospitalist,” said Dr. Doucet. The flexibility has also allowed her to not only work with the maternal health home but also pursue her passion for medical aesthetics, while still being able to focus on her career as an OB hospitalist. Dr. Doucet emphasizes that transitioning to OB hospitalist work has been a life-changing decision, bringing her not only professional fulfillment but also personal joy. “I wasn’t the happy, smiling person I used to be,” she admits, recalling the toll of burnout. Now, she feels re-energized and proud of the work she does as an OB hospitalist.
