Expert voices in maternal care and safety
In today’s evolving healthcare landscape, OB/GYNs are increasingly exploring innovative career paths to provide better care for mothers and babies while finding renewed passion for their work. At OBHG, dedicated physicians like Dr. Benjamin DeLisa are redefining what it means to deliver exceptional maternal healthcare.
When Dr. DeLisa found himself feeling the early signs of burnout, just a few years out of residency, he made a life-changing decision—one that didn’t involve stepping back from medicine, but diving deeper into it.
In 2013, a colleague invited him to join a mission trip to the Philippines. That single trip was transformative. “From day one, I was hooked,” he recalls. “It recharged my batteries in a way I didn’t think possible.” The experience of providing care in a resource-limited setting, working closely with a dedicated team, and serving grateful patients reminded him why he pursued medicine in the first place.
Today, as an OB hospitalist with OBHG in Kirkland, WA, Dr. DeLisa continues to return to the Philippines annually for mission work—a tradition he plans to keep up long into retirement. But it’s not just the missions that keep him grounded. It’s the work-life balance that OB hospitalist medicine provides that allows him to pursue his passion of medical mission work.
More than just shifts—a life beyond the hospital
At OBHG, Dr. DeLisa works six shifts a month. This flexible schedule lets him not only plan missions with ease but also take time for personal enrichment. Recently, he explored Japan with his 16-year-old son on the way to a mission. Back at home, he’s earned his captain’s license and sails regularly around the Puget Sound—something he never had time for in private practice.
“It’s more than a job. It’s a lifestyle that supports passion, purpose, and personal growth.”
-Dr. Benjamin DeLisa
Collaboration at the core
Hospitalist medicine can sound isolating, but Dr. DeLisa says the opposite is true. Between OBHG’s national network of clinicians, real-time case consultations, and interdisciplinary teamwork, he feels more connected than ever. Whether it’s chatting with midwives, supporting community physicians, or initiating fetal heart tracing education for new nurses, collaboration is at the heart of his daily routine.
Advice to aspiring OB hospitalists
His advice to those considering the path? “Be flexible. Be open. Every day brings something new—and that’s the beauty of it.” For those burned out or stuck in the routine, OB hospitalist medicine might just be the career revitalization you didn’t know you needed.
