Every day, OBHG clinicians deliver life-saving care for all women with OB/GYN emergencies. Their presence in the hospital and dedication to patients makes a significant difference when every minute counts.
What began as a routine delivery quickly became a life-threatening emergency. This case highlights the critical role OB hospitalists play in ensuring safe outcomes for mothers.
Dr. Tina Hendrick, OB Hospitalist and Market Medical Director with Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG), recalls a case that demonstrates how quickly conditions can change in obstetrics and how immediate access to expert care can save lives.
A routine procedure takes a dangerous turn
The patient had undergone a scheduled C-section without complications. Although she had a history of high blood pressure and preeclampsia, her surgery and initial recovery appeared uneventful.
Later that evening, everything changed.
A nurse contacted Dr. Hendrick after noticing the patient was experiencing severe abdominal pain, low blood pressure, and altered responsiveness. These were subtle but concerning signs that something was wrong.
Recognizing the signs of a hidden emergency
Upon evaluation, Dr. Hendrick suspected internal bleeding. Determining the source was critical. Was the bleeding occurring at the surgical site or inside the uterus?
The answer would determine the course of treatment.
Using bedside ultrasound, Dr. Hendrick quickly identified the cause as concealed bleeding within the uterus. Because the patient had undergone a C-section, her cervix remained closed. There were no visible signs of hemorrhage, which made the diagnosis more challenging.
Acting fast to save a life
With the diagnosis confirmed, Dr. Hendrick immediately activated a massive transfusion protocol and coordinated rapid intervention. Blood products were administered, and the patient was prepared for surgery before the patient’s private physician arrived.
That time made all the difference.
“In a situation like this, we did not have 10 extra minutes,” Dr. Hendrick explains. “The patient was deteriorating quickly. Without immediate intervention, she could have died.”
The OBHG difference: immediate, expert care
By the time the primary physician arrived, the patient had already received life-saving treatment and was ready for definitive surgical care.
Dr. Hendrick’s rapid assessment, accurate diagnosis, and decisive action ensured a positive outcome. The patient survived, and today both she and her baby are doing well.
Why hospitalists matter
This case highlights a fundamental advantage of the OBHG model: on-site, 24/7 obstetric expertise.
In obstetrics, emergencies can escalate in minutes. Having a dedicated OB hospitalist immediately available means:
- Faster recognition of complications
- Immediate diagnostic and clinical decision-making
- Rapid initiation of life-saving protocols
- Improved outcomes for mothers and babies
