VIDEO: Dr. Susan Passarella shares her insights and experiences as an OB hospitalist

Dr. Susan Passarella, the OBHG Site Director at Ocean University Medical Center in New Jersey, was recently featured in a video by Hackensack Meridian Health. In the video, Dr. Passarella shares her insights and experiences as an OB hospitalist.

As an OB hospitalist, we take care of all patients that are pregnant that come into the hospital. We’re here 24/7 to really help with patients that are in labor. My philosophy is to have a healthy mom and a healthy baby. Often, patients have birth plans and ideas as to how they want their birth to go, and babies tend to really make that decision for us. It’s my job to help expedite that care and keep that mom and baby safe.

We don’t know our patients before they get here. Many are just visiting the Jersey Shore for the summer and their water breaks. Often, they’ll hit the door and deliver within about 5 or 10 minutes of even getting upstairs. They’ve never met me before, and it’s my job to really establish good rapport really quickly with them so they feel safe and comfortable that I’m going to provide them the best care that I can.

I like going to work because I feel like I make a difference. Sometimes patients will be very low risk and all of a sudden they become very high risk very fast. If I can kind of pop in there and be aware of it and prevent any harm from happening to that baby or the mom and optimize their delivery, then it’s a good day.

We are proud to have Dr. Passarella as part of the OBHG team and are grateful for her unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of both mothers and babies.
