Setting the Standard in Maternal Health: Meet Dr. John Caravello

OBHG celebrates the clinicians who advance maternal health and redefine care through leadership, research and innovation. Each month, we highlight the work of OB hospitalists making a difference in their communities. This month’s spotlight shines on Dr. John Caravello, whose passion for evidence-based care and statewide collaboration is helping improve outcomes for mothers and babies across Florida.

Leading maternal quality improvement in Florida

Dr. Caravello’s journey to OB hospitalist work began with a desire for balance and a renewed focus on quality. After more than two decades in private practice, he found the constant demands of office work and after-hours responsibilities left little room for professional growth or personal time.

“I wanted to have a better opportunity to balance my passion, which is working with quality collaboratives and having opportunities to provide high-quality, evidence-based care,” he said.

That passion led him to the Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative (FPQC), where he has served as a clinical lead for several statewide initiatives focused on reducing maternal mortality and morbidity. His work has supported projects centered on obstetric hemorrhage, hypertension, cesarean delivery and postpartum access to care—each designed to improve safety for mothers and babies across the state.

Beyond his leadership roles, Dr. Caravello also volunteers as an instructor, teaching obstetric patient safety and fetal monitoring courses. “Ultimately, the goal is the same,” he said. “Apply current evidence-based recommendations to lower the impact of severe morbidity for both moms and babies.”

How OB hospitalist work helped Dr. Caravello refocus his career

Since joining Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG), Dr. Caravello has found the balance he was seeking.

“When I’m on shift, I’m working, but when I’m off, I have the opportunity to focus on other meaningful work,” he said. “That flexibility has allowed me to continue my involvement with FPQC and help shape care practices statewide.”

When Broward Health transitioned to OBHG, Dr. Caravello saw firsthand how OBHG’s structured approach and emphasis on quality translated to measurable improvements. “Not only was there no drop-off in care, we actually saw an improvement in our quality metrics,” he said. “OBHG stresses quality through standardization. It became plug and play. It did not matter who the doctor was—the care was just as good, if not better.”

Empowering clinicians to make a broader impact

For Dr. Caravello, the OB hospitalist model has not only improved his quality of life but also expanded his ability to influence the future of maternal care. He values OBHG’s commitment to supporting clinicians in their professional growth and its focus on creating safer, more consistent care for patients.

“The company wants you to be successful,” he said. “It gives you the freedom to pursue things that matter. What drew me here was OBHG’s commitment to evidence-based practice and structured communication because consistent, high-quality care simply saves lives.”
