Today’s story focuses on OB hospitalist Dr. Maegan Lubbers and how she delivered lifesaving care to a patient.
Summary:
In healthcare, every moment counts, and every decision can mean the difference between life and death. For one OB-GYN hospitalist, Dr. Maegan Lubbers, a typical shift at the hospital turned into a life-saving mission that showcased the resilience of both the patient and the medical team.
It all began at eight o’clock in the morning when Dr. Lubbers arrived for her shift. Waiting for her was a 26-year-old woman who was 41-plus weeks pregnant and scheduled for a C-section. The patient had been admitted three days prior for a scheduled induction due to her late-term pregnancy. However, her journey had been far from smooth sailing.
The young woman had undergone multiple rounds of medication to prepare her cervix for induction. After progressing into labor, she was put on Pitocin for several days. Despite her efforts, complications arose when she developed a fever overnight, leading to a diagnosis of chorioamnionitis, a serious infection of the membranes and chorion of the placenta. She was promptly started on antibiotics.
As the patient reached complete dilation, she began pushing at 2:00 am, a process that lasted for four grueling hours. Given her prolonged pushing and infection, the medical team decided that a C-section was necessary. However, there were additional challenges to overcome.
One major concern was the adequacy of the patient’s epidural, which had to be replaced before the procedure could proceed. Additionally, the extended duration of labor and infection increased the risk of a hemorrhage during delivery. Despite these challenges, the team was determined to do whatever it took to safely deliver the baby and ensure the mother’s well-being.
In the end, the dedication and expertise of Dr. Lubbers and her team paid off. The C-section was successful, and a healthy baby was born. The mother, though exhausted, was stable and recovering well. The outcome was a testament to the resilience of both the patient and the medical team, who worked tirelessly to ensure a positive outcome.
