Recently, MetroWest Medical Center’s Beautiful Beginnings maternity team in Framingham, MA completed an intensive emergency drill designed to ensure every mom and baby receives the highest level of care—when seconds matter most.
Before the simulation, OBHG Site Director Dr. Robert Gottlieb led a focused 15‑minute lecture on concealed placental abruptions—a rare but life‑threatening complication. His expert insights helped prime the team for the challenges ahead, sharpening their diagnostic timing and response strategies. Dr. Gottlieb discussed the types and varieties of placental abruption, risk factors and signs of a concealed abruption and hemorrhage.
Then came the hands-on scenario: a rapid, coordinated response to both a postpartum hemorrhage and a neonatal code—pulling together nurses, physicians, respiratory therapy, blood‑bank staff, anesthesiologists, and OB specialists in a seamless, lifesaving choreography.
The team, led by Dr. Robert Gottlieb, was involved in a simulation drill complete with a volunteer staff as the person in labor, an overhead rapid response drill, transfer of the patient to the operating room (OR) and concurrent neonatal resuscitation drill. This was a very comprehensive day.
“The collaboration among our OBHG team and the entire response team identified a strong relationship and teamwork aimed to improve patient care and outcomes. We are fortunate to have OBHG in house 24/7 to respond to unexpected events!” – Cathy Curbow RN, Interim Perinatal Educator, MetroWest Medical Center – Framingham Union Hospital
Participating in and leading emergency preparedness drills is something OBHG clinicians regularly do as part of our commitment to clinical excellence and safer outcomes for moms and babies.
Kudos to Dr. Gottlieb and the MetroWest Medical Center team for their dedication to continuous learning and exceptional maternal‑newborn care!
