Expert voices in maternal care and safety

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) are vital in modern maternal healthcare, bringing expertise and compassion to expectant mothers. Abigail Johnson, a CNM practicing at Mercy Hospital Fort Smith in Arkansas as part of the OB hospitalist team, exemplifies this commitment by shaping maternal care, where she became the first onsite CNM.

Despite midwifery’s long-standing place in healthcare, Abigail often encounters individuals surprised by the continued presence and impact of midwives today. Through her work, she demonstrates how CNMs enhance patient outcomes and elevate the standard of care. The flexibility of the OBHG scheduling model also allows her to pursue her passions and mission-driven initiatives while maintaining her professional responsibilities.

Prioritizing patient safety and best practices

OBHG clinicians are maternal safety champions, setting the standard in maternal healthcare and ensuring that labor and delivery units operate with the highest standards of care. Abigail emphasizes the importance of collaboration, continuous learning and adherence to best practices. Regular case discussions, peer reviews and quality assessments enable teams to refine protocols and enhance patient safety.

By providing 24/7 obstetric coverage, OBHG ensures that hospitals have immediate access to skilled providers, mitigating risks and improving response times during emergencies. This proactive approach strengthens patient outcomes and reinforces OBHG’s commitment to maternal health.

A passion for service beyond the hospital

Many OBHG clinicians are dedicated to making an impact beyond the hospital setting. With OBHG’s flexible scheduling model, clinicians have the time to pursue many passions outside of work—including participating in medical mission work. OBHG even offers scholarships to help clinicians participate in humanitarian efforts.

Last June, Abigail participated in a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic, sponsored by Hope Ministries International. Alongside a team of medical, dental, and optical professionals, she helped provide essential care to more than 3,400 individuals across five remote villages.

One of the most profound moments of the trip was using a Doppler to allow expectant mothers to hear their baby’s heartbeat for the first time. This simple yet powerful experience reinforced the importance of compassionate, high-quality maternal care. The mission also provided medications, clothing, personal care items and small gifts for children, ensuring a holistic approach to community health.
