Choosing an employment model is one of the most important decisions in an OB/GYN’s career. Whether stepping out of residency or making a mid-career transition, understanding the benefits, challenges and legal implications of each employment type can help physicians find the right fit for both their professional goals and personal lives.
In a recent webinar hosted by Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG), Dr. Lisa Bukovac, OBHG’s Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations, and employment attorney Sarah Skubas of Jackson Lewis delivered an in-depth discussion about the evolving OB/GYN employment landscape. From private practice to academic medicine, hospital employment to OB hospitalist and locum tenens roles, they outlined each path in today’s healthcare environment.
The webinar covers key questions OB/GYNs often ask:
- What’s the real difference between a W-2 employee and a 1099 independent contractor?
- Is private practice still viable—and what are the financial risks?
- How does OB hospitalist work compare when it comes to flexibility and long-term satisfaction?
- What should new graduates consider when choosing their first role?
Dr. Bukovac shared her own experience moving from private practice to OB hospitalist work, citing the desire for more time with her family as the catalyst. That decision ultimately reshaped her career—and her life. Meanwhile, Skubas provided legal clarity around employment classifications, wage and hour laws, and benefits eligibility, encouraging physicians to look beyond compensation alone when evaluating a contract.
One of the most valuable takeaways was a reminder to assess both income and time:
“Take the total income you want to earn and divide it by the time it takes to earn it,” said Dr. Bukovac. “Factor in commuting, charting, on-call time—everything. Make sure it supports the life you want.”
Final Thoughts: Know Your Worth
There’s no one-size-fits-all employment model for OB/GYNs. Dr. Bukovac wrapped the session with this advice:
“Take the income you want to earn, divide it by the time it takes to earn it, and include everything—commutes, daycare drop-offs, admin time. Make sure it adds up to a life you love.”
Or as Dolly Parton wisely said:
“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”
