A Vision for Empowerment: The Charity’s Work
The mission was centered on a unique charity led by Dr. Carson’s former patient, Mary Tarkok. Inspired by the Heifer Organization, the charity gifts cows exclusively to women, elevating their status within the community while providing sustenance and a path to economic independence.
Dr. Carson shared touching stories of women whose lives were transformed through this program. One recipient became a teacher, gaining respect in her community. Another overcame the stigma of a prison sentence for brewing illegal alcohol and is now building a legal livelihood. The referral hospital in Kapsabet, the largest in the county, serves a population of over one million people but lacks basic medical supplies, such as sterile gowns and fetal monitors. Labor and delivery facilities consist of three stretchers with no privacy, and cesarean deliveries are performed in outdated, poorly equipped operating rooms.
Maternal and fetal mortality rates remain alarmingly high, worsened by cultural practices like home births with lay midwives who lack medical training and equipment. The prevalence of untreated fistulas further isolates affected women, many of whom face lifelong ostracization.
Bridging the Gap with Education and Advocacy
Determined to make an impact, Dr. Carson engaged the community in discussions about preventive care. She spoke at ceremonies and community events, advocating for HPV vaccinations, prenatal care, routine mammograms, and cervical cancer screenings.
