At Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG), our ability to integrate seamlessly into hospital culture isn’t just a benefit—it’s a hallmark of our model. In fact, our partners consistently rate us 8.5 out of 10 for becoming a true extension of their in-house team. This deep cultural alignment enables stronger collaboration and helps ensure continuity of care for every patient we touch.
But integration isn’t possible without strong on-site leadership.
That’s where the Clinical Site Director comes in.
What is a clinical site director?
A Site Director at OBHG is more than a lead physician—they’re a connector, communicator, and catalyst for excellence. Clinical Site Directors bridge the gap between OBHG’s national infrastructure and the unique environment of their local hospital. They oversee clinical operations, foster collaboration between clinicians and hospital staff, and help align team goals with hospital priorities.
In a recent survey, 90% of hospital partners said their Site Director meets or exceeds expectations, especially when it comes to creating a culture of safety, stability, and clinical quality.
What do site directors deliver?
Hospital leaders say they value OBHG’s:
- 24/7 clinician coverage
- Strong clinical leadership
- Enhanced clinical quality and standards
But it’s the Site Director who ensures these values come to life on the ground.
Whether it’s stepping in to solve scheduling challenges on short notice or driving long-term quality improvement initiatives, Site Directors provide the strategic flexibility hospitals need in today’s dynamic healthcare landscape.
One partner put it this way:
“Their ability to balance short-term operational needs with long-term strategic planning has been key to our success.”
Why this role matters now more than ever
In an era defined by physician burnout, staffing shortages, and increasing scrutiny over maternal care outcomes, OBHG Site Directors provide the leadership and continuity that labor and delivery units need. They help stabilize OB teams, support midwives and community physicians, and elevate standards of care.
And perhaps most importantly, they help lead through change—a skill that’s never been more critical.
How to become a site director
If you’re an OB/GYN who thrives on leadership, communication, and clinical excellence, the Site Director role may be your next step.
Here’s what we look for:
✅ Proven clinical expertise
✅ Strong communication and collaboration skills
✅ Leadership experience or ambition
✅ Desire to shape culture and drive quality
✅ Passion for supporting patients, peers, and partners
Many of our Site Directors start as OBHG hospitalists and grow into the role with mentorship and support from our clinical leadership team. Others bring prior leadership experience and are ready to lead from day one.
“The Site Director of a program should be the most engaged OB/GYN at the hospital. We’re present, and that allows us to capture those small teaching moments with learners—whether it’s nursing students, medical students, residents, or nurses. These little learning moments happen throughout the day, and they might not occur if I were still running between labor and delivery, the OR, and the office.
It also really fosters strong relationships with the nursing directors and clinical directors on the labor and delivery unit. As a whole perinatal services team, we’re meeting regularly, talking, and asking: Does this policy need updating? Are we aligned with best practices?
This role has really allowed me to focus on those things, and I’ve truly enjoyed it.” – Dr. Beth Rutherford, OBHG Market Medical Director and Site Director.
