TIME: More than one third of U.S. counties are maternity care deserts
Roughly a third of U.S. counties are maternity care deserts, according to a new March of Dimes report, with over half lacking a hospital with labor and delivery services, a figure unchanged since 2016 and expected to worsen due to upcoming Medicaid cuts. Dr. Lisa Bukovac of Ob Hospitalist Group warns that longer drives for care can delay treatment for dangerous pregnancy complications like bleeding, noting that in obstetrics, "minutes count."
