Beyond Type 1: How One Black Mother With Type 1 Diabetes Navigated Her Pregnancy

OBHG's Dr. Alissa Erogbogbo recently spoke with Beyond Type 1 about opportunities to improve maternal health outcomes for Black mothers with diabetes. In the article, titled How One Black Mother With Type 1 Diabetes Navigated Her Pregnancy, Dr. Erogbogbo says that there are opportunities to improve maternal health outcomes for Black mothers with diabetes through legislation and that an ideal bill would include postpartum follow-up.

“Whether it’s a nurse that they follow up with, a phone call to make sure they’re [mothers] are checking their blood sugars, there’s a lot of opportunity to really decrease the maternal mortality rate,” Erobogbo says.

Additionally, Dr. Erogbogbo explains that Black mothers with diabetes need provider access, including endocrinologists and nutritional therapists. She adds that by giving provider access to Black mothers, it allows them to learn about their pregnancy, ask questions, and take preventative measures.

Dr. Erogbogbo also talks about the handfull of states that have enacted legislation to seek federal approval of their 1115 waiver. Click here to read the full article.
