Contemporary OB/GYN: CMS proposed G-codes for obstetric billing draw concern
OBHG's Dr. Mark Simon discussed the CMS proposed G-codes for obstetric billing with Contemporary OB/GYN. Dr. Simon and other industry leaders expressed concern about the Medicare-only G-codes:
“It is encouraging that CMS has recognized the new maternity care codes and service-level reporting that better reflects how modern obstetric care is delivered by coordinated teams,” Mark Simon, MD, MMM, CPE, Chief Medical Officer, Ob Hospitalist Group, Greenville, South Carolina, told Contemporary OB/GYN.
“However, many clinicians and health system leaders share the concern that the proposed Medicare-only G-codes would preserve an outdated bundled payment model that fails to account for the distinct, resource-intensive work of maternal care clinicians, including OB hospitalists who manage labor, respond to emergencies, and provide continuous in-house care, often without performing the delivery themselves,” Simon added.
