The Hospitalist: Labor & Delivery: An overlooked entry point for the spread of viral infection

OBHG's Dr. Rahki Dimino authored an article about screening for viral exposure (including coronavirus) and care for women, fetuses and newborns in The Hospitalist.  The article discusses identification of patients with coronavirus and the risk of other viral infections, including influenza.

Recommendations for hospital L&D protocols are also shared, ensuring that hospital plans include labor and delivery and pregnant patients. “In short, protocols in L&D should mirror those of the ED. But in L&D, clinicians and staff haven’t necessarily been trained to look for or ask for these conditions. Hospitalists can educate their peers and colleagues and advocate for changes at the administrative level.”

Dr. Dimino also discusses the important role of OB hospitalists in protecting pregnant women from viral spread, whether coronavirus, influenza or other new viruses.
