Syracuse is located in Central New York about 87 miles east of Rochester. It’s the halfway point between New York City and Toronto and is the economic and educational hub of the area.
The city is known as the gateway to the scenic Finger Lakes, and there are several state parks, hiking trails and waterfalls to enjoy nearby. Syracuse is home to the Erie Canal Museum, the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology which boasts a planetarium, and the Everson Museum of Art. The 1920s-era Landmark Theatre offers Broadway shows and concerts.
Major research universities include the private Syracuse University, which offers 18 varsity sports programs, the State University of New York Upstate Medical University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Upstate Medical University, the region’s largest employer, is one of only about 125 academic medical centers in the country.
